Causes of sexual dysfunction in women

Sexual dysfunction in women: Causes and remedies

It may be out of the ordinary to talk about sexual dysfunction in women or its causes as this is usually associated with men. However, women can also have sexually related problems. Therefore, it is important that you know what can cause this and the remedies available.

Sexual dysfunctions are persistent, recurrent problems with sexual response, orgasm or pain that can cause distress between partners. Sexual dysfunction includes pain during intercourse, involuntary painful contraction (spasm) of the muscles around the vagina, and lack of interest in sex and problems with arousal or orgasm. Reduced sexual desire is the most common form of sexual dysfunction.

CAUSES OF SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION IN WOMEN

  1. Medical Conditions: A number of medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure and bladder problems can cause sexual dysfunction. Scarring from surgery in your vaginal opening or in other parts of your genitalia also can change one’s sexual experience.
  2. Physical Changes: other possible causes include hormonal imbalance related to pregnancy, childbirth, breast feeding and menopause. These can greatly reduce your desire for sex.
  3. Psychological Factors: Depression and anxiety commonly contribute to sexual dysfunction. Previous experiences can affect a woman’s psychological and sexual development, causing problems such as:i.) Negative sexual or other experiences may lead to low self-esteem, shame, or guilt.
ii.) Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse during childhood or adolescence can teach children to control and hide emotions. Women who control and hide their emotions may have difficulty expressing sexual feelings.
  4. Hormonal Changes: Lower estrogen levels after menopause may lead to changes in your genital tissues and sexual responsiveness. A decrease in estrogen leads to decreased blood flow to the pelvic region, which can result in less genital sensation, as well as needing more time to build arousal and reach orgasm. These factors can lead to painful sexual intercourse also referred to as dyspareunia. Sexual desire also decreases when hormonal levels decrease.
  5. Gynecologic Conditions: Endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids and vaginitis can all cause pain during sex. Vaginismus, a condition that causes vaginal muscle spasms, can also make intercourse unpleasant.
